Leeds had to hold on right to the very end of the game to first of all draw level and then qualify for the final on penaty kicks. Rosario Aquino seemed to have won the game for Lazio when he broke the deadlock in the seventy-eighth minute. But Leeds kept on battling and Derek Lilley won possession and got the ball to Gunnar Halle on the right flank. The Scotsman made for the far post and when the Norwegian crossed he headed the ball back across the goal for Lee Bowyer to blast the ball into the net from close range. In the penalty shoot-out Stephen McPhail failed with his attempt, but Ian Harte, Derek Lilley and Lee Bowyer had all succeeded. With Nedved and Venturin missing for Lazio it was left to Lee Matthews to confidently drive home the winning spot kick. Dick O'Hanlon of Waterford was the Referee. In the other Semi-Final Liverpool had disposed of St Patricks Athletic 3-2. Patrik Berger opened the scoring in the sixteenth minute and after Hankins had equalised in the thirty-third minute, Karl-Heiz Riedle restored Liverpool's lead a minute later. Danny Murphy added to their lead four minutes before Half-Time and Liverpool had the game in the bag, until Gomley scored from the spot with two minutes left on the clock, but that was the final score. All the games were played at Landsdowne Road, Dublin
